Dorothy Jean (Sanders) Hicks

Dorothy Jean (Sanders) Hicks, age 88 of LaHarpe, Kansas.

Dorothy was born August 9, 1923 in Manhattan, Kansas. She was the oldest of 3 children to Leland Lincoln Sanders and Helen (Bigley) Sanders.

She grew up in the Blue Mound and LaHarpe Ks communities and graduated from LaHarpe High School in the class of 1941.
After high school she attended nursing school in Kansas City, Missouri, but after the outbreak of WWII she went to work at Pratt-Whitney on the assembly line making aircraft parts and assembling planes in Kansas City, Mo.

In May 1950, she was united in marriage to Arthur Aften Hicks in Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in the Blue Mound and LaHarpe communities. She was the mother of four children: Leland Miles(Butch), Helen Viola, Sue Ellen and Arthur Patrick Hicks.


She worked for Dr. Eugene Myers in Iola for many years until his retirement and then for Dr. T.O. Osborn until her retirement. She enjoyed being out and busy. She worked part-time during her retirement at the LaHarpe Senior Citizens Center and the Iola Public Library.

On November 30, she suffered a massive stroke and passed away December 4 at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, eldest son Butch, grandson Lee Hicks, and granddaughter Cassandra Hicks.

She is survived by a sister Lois Sanders of Osawatomie, Kansas, and three children: Helen (Hicks) Brand and husband Charlie of Osawatomie, Ks; Sue (Hicks) Riley and husband Steve of Ft Scott, Ks; and Patrick Hicks and wife Mickey of Iola, Ks. Three granddaughters: Dawn (Riley) Solko and husband Barry of Springfield, Mo; Stephanie (Brand) Young and husband Jason of Olathe, Ks; and Sarah (Hicks) Gonzalez and husband Nick of Humboldt, Ks; Two grandsons: Jon-Michael Brand of Denver, CO and Jamie Hicks of Iola, Ks; Five great grandsons and two great granddaughters.

A celebration of life will be held at the LaHarpe City Hall on Saturday, December 10 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorials to the Senior Services of SEK, P O Box 1415, Coffeyville, Ks 67337
