Ray Foster Jewell, age 32, of Osawatomie, Kansas, died Monday, December 12, 2011 at his home.
Ray was born June 24, 1979 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the younger of two children born to Norman and Susan Rene’e (Denyer) Jewell Jr. His mother, Susan later married Paul Wood, who raised Ray; he thought of him as his father.
Ray received his GED from Odessa High School. He joined the United States Air force on January 7, 1998 where he served as a Security Forces Apprentice. He received the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Training Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Award, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, NATO Ribbon, and the Basic Force Protection Badge. His service in the Air Force ended October 4, 2002. He enlisted into the Missouri Army National Guard on May 30, 2007 where he served as a UH-60 Helicopter Repairer. He received a Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 'M' device, and the Basic Aviation Badge. He had two tours of active duty while with the Missouri National Guard. One was to attend the UH-60 repairer course, after which he was awarded the Missouri Commendation Ribbon for his outstanding leadership and performance at the course. His second tour of active duty with the Missouri National Guard was his deployment with the 1107th Aviation Group; his efforts during this deployment aided the 1107th in being awarded the 'Outstanding Unit Award.'
Ray was married on November 29, 1999 in Weatherby Lake, Missouri to Shawna Dorsey. They became the parents of two children. The marriage ended in divorce.
Ray was married on July 25, 2009 in Independence, Missouri to Sarah Elizabeth Stratton. The marriage ended in divorce.
Ray was married on April 16, 2011 in Paola, Kansas to Shellney Ann Barthol and they made their home in Osawatomie, Kansas.
Ray was a member of Pearl Street Baptist Church in Paola, Kansas, Watch D.O.G.S., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3712.
Known survivors are his wife, Shellney of the home; three step children, Jozilynn, Brodee, and Kiptyn Bowman of the home; son, Hunter Jewell of Pleasant Hill, MO; daughters, Hayley and Alexis Jewell of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Adeline Faris of Pueblo, CO. Parents, Norman Jewell Jr. of Kansas and Susan Rene’e (Denyer) Munro of Montrose, MO; half brother, Steven Jewell, sister, Michelle Rene’e Hernandez of Comanche, TX, and half sister, Crystal Sue Lagud of Kansas City, MO.
Funeral services will be held at 7pm, Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home followed by visitation until 9pm. Full Military Honors are from the United States Army from Fort Riley, KS, Missouri National Guard, and American Legion Riders of Paola, KS.
