D.L.”Mac” McMillin, age 93 of Osawatomie, Ks. died Thursday May 17, 2012 at the Life Care Center in Osawatomie.
Mac was born April 18, 1919 in Osawatomie, Ks. He was the son of Ray Irwin McMillin and Bertha Ellen (Hewitt) McMillin.
He attended the Osawatomie Schools.
Mac left home at a young age and went to Anaheim, California where he worked as a shop mechanic in a gas station.
Mac met and married Mary Elizabeth Salscheider in Anaheim California in 1938. They became the parents of three children.
They moved to Wichita, Kansas where he was employed by the Boeing Aircraft plant.
They moved his family to Paola to live with his mother while he served with the US Army during WWII from June 26, 1944 thru Jan. 16, 1946. He served in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received three bronze service stars.
He returned to Paola where he worked with Raymond and Jack Rhea in a Kiaser-Fraizer Automobile dealership, north of the N.W. corner of the square on Silver St.
Then he went on his own in a Willies Automobile dealership west of the courthouse on Miami St.
He was a silent partner with Art Jones when they bought Watkins Chevrolet in Osawatomie in the early 70’s.
He later worked for Bill Puser and John Shields, Bob Hite Chevrolet, also with Bill and Jim Browning.
When he was in his 80’s he repaired bicycles and he became known as “bicycle man” in Osawatomie.
He loved going fishing with Hugh and Jay Walters.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one daughter Karen Sue Moore who died March 2006.
He is survived by two sons: Thomas McMillin of Paola and Dan McMillin of Osawatomie, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
There was cremation and no services are planned.
