Doris Louise Vasquez

Doris Louise Vasquez, age 88 of Osawatomie, Kansas died Wednesday June 20, 2012 at the Vintage Park of Osawatomie.

Doris was born December 12, 1923 in Mound City, KS. She was the oldest of 5 children born to Bevely Joe and Ada Pearl (Heckadon) Hewitt.

The Family later moved from Mound City to Osawatomie, KS.

Doris graduated from Osawatomie High School in the Class of 1942. She studied at Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. She got her Associates degree from Allen County Community College in Iola, Kansas. Her bachelor’s degree came from Ottawa University and she went to the University of Kansas for Graduates School.

She was married February 27, 1954 to Ernest F. Samuel Vasquez in Emilane Zapata in the state of Moreles, Mexico. They became the parents of one daughter. The marriage ended in divorce December 21, 1971.

Doris worked in a doctors office in Compton, California. She also worked in a Private psychiatric hospital in both California and Kansas. She worked at Topeka State Hospital for a few years. Later, she worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital for 20 years, where she was a licensed Mental Health Technician. Doris then worked as a social worker for Social and Rehabilitation Services in Osawatomie, Kansas, where she later retired.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Osawatomie. She was a deacon of the church for many years and a member of the MERA class.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, one brother (J.W. Hewitt) and one sister (Donna Stone).

She is survived by her daughter (Debbie Louise Vasquez Gillespie) and son-in-law (Mike Gillespie) of Rural Parker, Kansas. Two sisters (Ruby O’Connor of Hidden Valley Lakes, Mapleton, Kansas) and (Beverly Metz of Emporia, Kansas). Two Grandchildren (Monetta L. Gillespie and Cruz Michael Gillespie) and a dear friend Carol Krull of Osawatomie.

Funeral service is Thursday, June 28, 10am at the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home with burial in Osawatomie Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are to Vintage Park of Osawatomie or Heartland Hospice.
