Annettie Angeline “Nettie” Carpenter , age 102 of Derby, KS formerly of Osawatomie, KS died Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Derby Health and Rehab in Derby, KS.
Nettie was born January 17, 1911 in Smith Center, KS. She was the eldest of six children of Randall and Elizabeth (Metcalf) Moore. She grew up in Smith Center and attended Smith Center Schools.
Nettie was married April 24, 1932 in Smith Center to Roy Milton Carpenter. Roy and Nettie were the parents of three children. While living in Smith Center, they struggled thru the Great Depression and Nettie kept the home fires burning while Roy served in the Navy during WWII from 1944-46. After Roy got home they moved to Osawatomie where Roy worked for the Gas Service Company. They lived in the same house over fifty years and always enjoyed entertaining family and friends. After Roy passed away in 1998, Nettie moved to Derby, KS in 1999 to be close to family.
Nettie was a devoted homemaker, beloved by friends and family. She was a wonderful cook and well known for her chicken & noodles. In addition to her love of family, she loved music and children.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir. She volunteered her time to help with Sub-Debs and Job’s Daughters when Colene was in high school.
She was preceded in death by Roy, her husband of sixty-six years; an infant son, Milton Dean; grandson Kurt Carpenter; three brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by daughter Colene (Gary) Read of Derby, KS; two sons: Don (Vicki) Carpenter of St. Louis, MO and Dennis (Marilyn) Carpenter of Wichita, KS; six grandchildren and their families, twenty great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Nettie leaves a legacy of love and happy memories for those whose lives she touched.
