Dovie was born on August 20, 1952 the youngest child of nine to Jesse and Elzabeth Jan (Kinder) Johnson in Rushville, Indiana. She attended school at Laurel High School graduating in the class of 1971.

After graduating she and her parents moved to Muncie, Indiana. Later Dovie moved to Kansas, where she met and married Samuel Niemeyer. They became the parents of two daughters (Melinda and Sandra). This marriage ended in divorce in 1977.

Dovie became a Certified Medication Aide and passed medicine in all the nursing homes in Miami County.

After her divorce she moved back to Indiana and became a Qualified Medication Aide.

In 1985 moved back to Kansas where she later met and married Michael Rutledge. This marriage ended in 1995.


She was employed at the Osawatomie Sate Hospital as a Mental Health Aide for 16 years. Dovie worked in the nursing field for 32 years until her illness with COPD forced her to stop in 2001.

Dovie was a former member of the Paola Eagles and was an avid dart player. She was on the Paola Eagles Winter Dart League. In the 1997-1998 season she received the award of Female with Most Darts Out and also took 1st Place the same year. Dovie liked to play Bingo and many other games, watch TV and play on the computer. But most of all she loved being with her grandchildren. Any time her grandchildren walked in, she would light the room up with her smile. Her grandkids were the love of her life and she would tell you so!!! :)

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

She is survived by her two daughters: Melinda Marie Rickle of Lexington, KY and Sandra Kay Johnson (Matt Kriesel) of Osawatomie, KS, two brothers: Clyde (Carol) Johnson of Redfield, KS and Lloyd Earl (Jenny) Johnson of Ingalls, Indiana, two sisters: Lora Mae Toth of Fountain Hills, AZ and Sue Ann (Ralph) Horn of Stanford, FL. Three grandchildren: Kaylee Shaye Rickle, Vance Scott Johnson Jr. and Morgan Karl Kriesel. And three step grand daughters: Leanne, Shawnna and Cassie, four great grand daughters Jayde, Adilyn, Nikki, Skylar, and many nieces, nephews and friends. And her beloved dog Carmella.
