Harry Stephen “Steve” Castleberry age 63, of Rantoul, Kansas died Friday, May 23, 2014 at his home.
Steve was born June 6, 1950 in Paola, Kansas, the eldest son of Clifford S. and Mary Alice (Bartlett) Castleberry.
Steve grew up in the Osawatomie area and attended Green Valley Country School (a one room school house) from first through sixth grade, later, attended Osawatomie High School. Steve lived with his grandparents Lee and Mary Bartlett on their farm near Green Valley to help on the farm. He had many fond memories of that time.
A Vietnam Veteran, Steve served the United States Army from, August 29, 1967 to June 16, 1970, remaining in the Army Reserves for three more years.
Steve received many badges and medals for his military service, some of which include the Vietnam Service medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal and three Bronze Service Stars.
On October 1, 1972 Steve married Gracie Ann Hatfield-Wise in Miami, Oklahoma. They became the parents of three children, Stephen Lee, Adam Jacob and Amy Michelle, settling in Rantoul, where they lived for thirty years.
Steve was a truck driver & worked for several companies. In 2012, he retired from truck driving for more than 40 years.
He was an outdoor enthusiast & "go to" mechanic that enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, rodeoing, riding motorcycles, & much more. Steve enjoyed teaching the grandsons & granddaughters these skills.
Steve enjoyed his family the most, especially being a grandfather. He would play games, put puzzles together, play with dolls, & even have tea parties with the granddaughters. Steve loved his family, friends, and the family we get to choose, he will be missed dearly by many.
Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents, step father Buz Crawford, and one grandson Elijah Wade Ball at the age of one year in 2007.
He is survived by his wife Gracie, two sons: Stephen (Cindi) Castleberry of Lane, KS, Adam "Jake" (Susie) Castleberry of Fort Scott, KS, daughter Amy (Wade) Ball of Ottawa, KS, and eight grandchildren: Wyatt and Ivey Castleberry, Coren, Dakota, Mayia and Stepheni Castleberry, Kambry and Shelby Ball, one sister Mary Dailey of Paola, KS, Stepmother Evelyn Castleberry of Neosho, MO and his dear friend and brother by choice Sherman Laas of Osawatomie, KS along with many other family and friends.
