Dorothy was born March 14, 1924 in Waverly, Iowa. She was the youngest of seven children born to John and Jenny (Howell) Farris. She went to school in Mound City, Kansas until 10th grade and decided not to continue as she would have to travel a long distance to a different school. While growing up, Dorothy loved being outside with her dad helping on the farm instead of being inside helping her mom in the kitchen.
On November 27, 1947, Dorothy married Leo Martin “Jack” Johnson in La Cygne, Kansas. They had 3 children: Leo R. “Jack” Johnson, Clarence R. “Rick” Johnson and Leoma R. (Johnson) Hood. The family lived in La Cygne and Topeka before moving in the 60’s to Paola, Kansas where they made their home.
Dorothy worked at a sewing factory, King Radio and as a photography artist. After retirement, she worked as a Walmart greeter. She took the job seriously and loved to visit with the people as they walked in. Dorothy was well liked by the whole community.
Even though Dorothy didn’t favor being in the kitchen growing up, she learned to cook very well. She loved to make meals for her family. She even cooked fried chicken and chicken noodles for her grandson’s and their teammates before home high school football games. Dorothy and her husband were avid fans and boosters of youth sports. They were honored with an award for their support and participation. Besides cooking, Dorothy loved music as she came from a family of musicians. Before failing health, she attended church at the Methodist Church in Paola.
