Max Robert McCready age 87, of Osawatomie, Kansas formerly of Paola and Ottawa, Kansas died Saturday, January 3, 2015 at his home.
Max was born January 28, 1927 in Vine Creek, Kansas the second of four children to John Cort and Rosalind Marie Alveta (Bergsten) McCready.
He grew up in the Ottawa County area. Max graduated from the Delphos High School in Delphos, Kansas with the class of 1945.
On May 31, 1945 Max was inducted in the United States Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He served for over sixteen months during WWII, in the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign, which included a tour in Germany and Austria. Max was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on October 31, 1946 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.
From 1949 to 1950 Max attended school to become a telegraph operator for the railroad. He began working for the Santa Fe Railroad in 1950 in Ottawa, Kansas.
In 1951 Max married Marjorie Hoffmeier the couple became the parents of two children. Max continued to work for the railroad until 1957 when he then began working for the Gambles Store in Ottawa. In 1967 he and his family moved to Paola, Kansas where he owned and operated the Paola Gambles Store from 1967 until 1971. Max and Marjorie divorced in 1968 after seventeen years of marriage.
Max met and married Vivian Ronsick Waite in 1969 they made their home in Paola. After selling the Gambles Store, Max went to work as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Paola. Later transferring to a clerk position at the post office in Shawnee Mission, Kansas until he retired in 1988. The couple were married for twenty-seven years when Vivian died on September 8, 1996.
Max and Carol “Dean” McKay Spradlin married on March 9, 1998, Max moved to Osawatomie where they have made their home for over sixteen years.
He enjoyed many different kinds of activities from woodworking, building furniture, fishing, hunting, golfing and travel. He and Dean took many “bus tours” and even traveled to places in Europe. Max loved acting and was in many different productions from high school thru adulthood. Church plays and community theaters to just name a few. He enjoyed board games and playing softball on the church teams during the summer. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Paola and later in the Osawatomie First Baptist Church, a former member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Ottawa, the American Legion Miami Post #156 of Paola and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, his second wife Vivian, one brother Lyle McCready and step daughter Debbie Boyce.
He is survived by his wife Carol “Dean” of the home, his two children: John (Charlene) McCready of Auburn, KS, Margaret (Darrell) Brown of Topeka, KS, step-daughters Pamela Waite of Houston, TX, Susan Wilson of St. Petersburg, FL, and Lisa (Shawn) Bonham of Yates Center, KS, step son Rick Waite of Paola, KS. Brother: Frank McCready of Minneapolis, KS, sister Pauline (Kenneth) Smith of Overland Park, KS, grandson Daniel McCready, nine step-grandchildren and twelve step great-grandchildren and one “Lying Brother In-Law” Jim Buckman of Osawatomie, KS along with many other friends and family.
