Paul Douglas “Doug” Emery age 77, of Paola, Kansas died unexpectedly Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at the Miami County Medical Center in Paola, Kansas.

Doug was born August 4, 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri the youngest child of four to George and Ollie Rebecca (Hough) Emery. Doug grew up and attended school in Paola, graduating from Paola High School with the class of 1956.

While attending high school Doug met the young girl that would one day become his bride, Alice Irene Graves. On August 29, 1958 the young couple traveled to Miami, Oklahoma and became husband and wife. They made their home in Paola and became the proud parents of their first born son Scott in 1960.

Doug was working as an agent for National Life & Accident Insurance Company and was transferred to an office in Lawrence, Kansas in 1961. The following year in 1962 they welcomed their second son Todd to the family. By 1963 Doug moved his family back to Paola and he continued to work for the insurance company until 1974.

Doug was a true entrepreneur having many different self-started businesses. By the mid 1970’s he had opened the first self-service gas station and a car wash in Paola. He owned both for over ten years, later selling the gas station and opening another one at Eastgate in Osawatomie, Kansas. This however was not his only venture, he owned and operated the Texaco Distributorship for Miami County throughout this same time. Doug finally retired from most of his businesses by the year 2000.

He and his wife Alice traveled off and on for many years, whether it be an insurance convention in Nashville or Chicago or a pleasure trip to New Orleans or the horse races in Hot Springs, Arkansas with friends, Doug and Alice truly enjoyed their adventures.

Doug liked to work in the yard and most likely he would have his little dachshund “Little Bit” running around beside him. He enjoyed going to the local coffee shops to just sit, talk and have a cup of coffee with friends. Doug could be described in many ways a few being, a devoted Royals fan, a hard worker, a jokester who like to tease and have fun, a very out-spoken person and would tell you how it was (even if you didn't want to hear it) and a man who loved his dog. He was a fantastic provider, husband, father, grandfather and friend. Many family, friends and coffee shop pals alike will miss his wit, humor, business sense and his smile.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Don Emery, sisters: Dorsey Berdean Bromell and Betty Spencer, two infant great grandchildren: Dre Allen Emery and Bae-Lee Emery.

He is survived by his wife Alice of the home, sons: Scott (Rhonda) Emery of Paola and Todd (Cindy) Emery of Paola, four grandchildren: Eric Emery, Brett Emery, Amanda Emery Johnson and Michael Emery, three great grandchildren: Eriona Emery, Aleeah Emery and Aubree Emery.
