Katherine E.“Katy” Alexander age 88, of Lane, Kansas went home to see our Heavenly Father on Saturday, February 21, 2015. She passed at home peacefully with her husband and son at her side.
Katy was born November 23, 1926 in Lane, Kansas. The only child of Clinton and Zoe Elizabeth (Sturgeon) LaFolllette. She was a lifelong resident of Lane, attending Baker Rural School from the 1st thru the 8th grade and graduating from Lane High School with the class of 1944.
She then went to work in the office of the Agricultural Department in Ottawa, Kansas known then as the ASC.
Even though they both grew up in Lane, Katy really got to know Joseph D. ”Joe” Alexander at Cameron Institute church camp and the couple soon became a permanent pair around Lane. On Joe’s twentieth birthday, October 6, 1945 the couple married in Ottawa and made their home on the family farm just outside of Lane. They became the parents of two children, Loretta Sue and Richard Eugene.
Katy was always a homemaker, however she did work outside of the house, not only working side by side with Joe on the farm but she was an Avon representative for a number of years until she began working for the United States Postal Service in Lane in 1960 as a part-time clerk. Six years later Katy became the Postmaster for the city of Lane in 1967 where she fulfilled that position for almost twenty years, until her retirement in 1988.
She was a charter member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and active participant in the local 4-H club, and served as the secretary treasurer for the Lane Senior Center from 1990 -2014. She was a devoted and active member of the Lane United Methodist Church and the church HDU organization.
Katy and Joe were always together, they loved each other and enjoyed being together. They rarely were apart, if you saw one, you saw them both. The couple were married for over sixty-nine years. She will be missed dearly by many.
Katy was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Loretta Sue (Alexander) Payden in 2010 and two great grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband Joe of the home, her son Richard Alexander and daughter in-law Pamela of Lane, KS, eight grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren with one on the way, and five great, great, grandchildren along with other family and friends.
