Brett Alan McMullin age 52, of Ottawa, Kansas formerly of Wellsville, Kansas died peacefully surrounded by his family, Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at his home after losing his courageous battle with cancer.
Brett was born in Burlington Iowa on November 17, 1962 the youngest of four children born to George William and Juanita Janet (Kerr) McMullin.
When he was just a small child the family moved to Rothville/Brookfield, Missouri and then settled in Marceline, Missouri where Brett grew up. He attended school in Marceline and graduated from Marceline High School with the class of 1981.
From the age of fourteen Brett worked in the oil fields with his older brother Doug in the Wellsville, Kansas area. After graduation he moved to Wellsville and went to work in the oil fields fulltime in Franklin and Miami Counties, not only for others but for his brother and himself.
In 1984 Brett married and became the father of three children. By 1987 he was a divorced, single father raising his children on his own. In 1989 he remarried and the family moved to Ottawa, Kansas, the family was again divided by divorce in 2001 and once again Brett was a single father. But his devotion to his children was unwavering, and the character of a man like Brett was the constant in his children’s lives.
Brett was always busy, whether it was working in an oil field or helping his brother with cattle and harvesting crops. And somehow he managed to open his own carpet cleaning business in 1994 and Carpet Cleaning Plus was created. His children were a part of the business also, helping him with all the jobs even at the young age of eight. Brett owned this company until 2005, however his two sons still remain in the same type of business.
He was a man of routine and work was part of it. He did many things without fail every day and week of every year. He always bought a Powerball ticket and he loved to buy “scratch off tickets”. His lottery winnings dream was an alligator farm in the mountains of Colorado. He liked to fish and camp, which he and his family did whenever they had the chance. Pomona Lake, Clinton Lake and Hillsdale Lake were a few of his favorite spots to camp and toss a hook in the water. He was a fan of NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was his favorite driver, he liked football but only if it was the KC Chiefs and his best little buddy was his beloved Tabby-Maine coon cat “Will Ferrell”.
He was a wonderful son, brother and an amazing father, one who would rather spend time with his family than anyone else. A son who every day of the week at 4pm would walk across the road to spend time with his mother reading the newspaper and visiting. A brother that would help you do anything and everything, and a father who loved his children and wanted only the best life for them. Teaching them life lessons not only in words but by example as a father, a friend and mentor.
Brett was preceded in death by his father in 2006, his Grandmother Leona McMullin , Aunt Lucille McMullin, Aunt Maxine Burke and many other loved family members.
He is survived by his mother Juanita McMullin of Ottawa, KS, children: Jacob McMullin of Ottawa, KS, Katie McMullin of Muscotah, KS and Brett M. McMullin of Ottawa, KS, brothers: Doug McMullin of Wellsville, KS and Glen McMullin of Tonganoxie, KS and sister Pam Little of Ottawa, KS. Four grandchildren: Gwen McMullin, Annalyn McMullin, Peyton Holthouse, Wyatt Mendell and Cheyenne Evans along with numerous friends and of course “Will Ferrell “.
Brett has been cremated and a Remembrance of Life Celebration will be held at 10:00am Monday, May 18, 2015 located at the North end of Forest Park in Ottawa, Kansas, everyone is welcome to attend.
