Avis Polley age 96, of Osawatomie, Kansas died Sunday, May 31, 2015 at the Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas.

Avis was born September 11, 1918, in LaCygne, Kansas the eldest child of three to Glen and Nellie (Collins) Harvey.

She grew up in LaCygne with her two younger brothers and attended school in LaCygne. When she was in high school Parker, Kansas schools merged with LaCygne and she then graduated from Parker High School with the class of 1936.

The following year in the summer of 1937, on June 13th Avis married Donald LaVerne “Jack” Polley in Parker, Kansas. Jack died on April 16, 1996 the couple had been married for almost fifty-nine years.

She was a person with a desire for knowledge and she loved school, so she attended the Ursuline Academy in Paola, Kansas and received a teaching certificate so she could teach in the country schools. She taught all grades in several country schools in the area for a few years.

She and Jack made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of three daughters, Evelyn, Karen and Mildred.

Avis went to work for the Osawatomie School System and began teaching the 5th grade at the elementary school. While still teaching Avis returned to school and attended the University of Ottawa and graduated with a four year degree in education. She then attended Pittsburg State University and received her Master’s in education in 1963. She continued to work as a 5th grade teacher for Osawatomie until she retired in the mid 1970’s after twenty-nine years of service in the field of teaching.

She dedicated her life to what she loved the most, being a teacher, a wife and mother. However there was one thing she really enjoyed doing and that was dance. She and Jack attended many functions dancing the night away. After she lost Jack she still continued to dance, she and a group of women friends attended local dances in the surrounding areas for many years. The seven women developed a close friendship and looked forward to every dance.
