Samuel David “Sam” Bachman age 71 of Osawatomie, KS died Wednesday February 15, 2017 at Indian Creek Healthcare, Overland Park, Kansas.
Sam was born August 27, 1945 in Osawatomie, Kansas. He was the ninth of ten children born to Phillip and Mary Catherine (Sharp) Bachman. He grew up in Osawatomie and attended the St. Philip Neri Catholic School for a few years.
When Sam was 19 years old he started working for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. His main job was to care for three horses, but he also set up props and helped with general set up. He had to lead three horses into the ring for their performance. With the circus, Sam traveled by train to 49 states and Canada and Mexico. He got to sightsee and meet celebrities everywhere he went. After 15 years of traveling with the circus, hearing loss and medical issues caused Sam to leave the circus. Anytime the circus would come to Kansas City, Sam would go and watch.
Sam moved back to Osawatomie in 1979. He lived with his mom until her passing in 1990. He lived in an apartment by himself until 2002 when he moved into Tri-KO housing. Sam loved to watch movies. His favorites were scary movies. On any Friday the 13 th ’s he would have a Friday the thirteenth movie marathon. Sam had a great sense of humor and was very onery. He was always trying to make people laugh. Sam was a member of the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Osawatomie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Donald “Sonny” Trumbly, Francis Bachman, Charles Bachman, Philip Bachman, George Bachman and Henry Bachman. Sisters Phyllis Henness, Gertrude Agnes Bachman, Dorothy Swedelius, and Anne Marie Forde.
Survivors include brothers Joe Bachman of Paola, KS, Bob Bachman of Woodbridge, VA, Jim Bachman of Galena, MO and Tom Bachman of Priest River, Idaho. Along with many other family and friends.
