Doyle B. “Red” McQuay age 87 of Bolivar, MO formally of Osawatomie, KS died Friday March 17, 2017 at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, MO.
Doyle was born on February 24, 1930 in Doniphan, Missouri. He was the second of ten children born to Richard Elza and Delia (Vance) McQuay. He grew up and attended school in St. Louis. In 1947 at the age of 17 Doyle enlisted in the United States Army. After his basic training, his first duty station was in Japan where he was a courier. His next duty station was Korea where he was a guard in preparation for the Korean War. After 4 years, Doyle was honorably discharged from the Army on November 24, 1951. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
At the age of 24 Doyle moved to Kansas where his parents were living. He started working at the Osawatomie State Hospital as a mental health technician. After several promotions to supervisory positions he became a Substance Abuse Counselor licensed thru K’ADACA.
Doyle and Merna Kay Henness were united in marriage on October 3, 1964 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together the couple had two sons, Vic and Chris.
Doyle worked for thirty-six years until retiring in 1989. He and Merna Kay then decided to move to their lake house on Pomme de Terre Lake near Hermitage, Missouri. . They continued to live at the lake until 2013, when they moved to Bolivar, Missouri.
Doyle loved to go fishing, camping, boating and especially their trips to Roaring River State Park for opening day of trout season. He was a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and played baseball when he was younger. He was an avid sports fan, especially football. At family functions you could always find him pitching horseshoes with his brothers. Doyle attended all of his sons sporting events. Doyle and Merna Kay spent 19 winters at South Padre Island, Texas and acquired many lifetime friends from all over the U.S. and Canada.
Doyle was very strong willed, loved to talk and always had a quick comeback. He worked very hard to overcome his illnesses. He believed his best accomplishment in life was to raise two sons who became remarkable men.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ralph, William and Wilburn, sisters Violet Adams and Patsy Richey. Brother in laws, Melvin Henness, and Wayne Henness and sisters in law Phyllis Henness and Marie McQuay.
Doyle is survived by his wife of 52 years Merna Kay of the home, sons Vic (Debbie) McQuay of Bolivar, MO and Chris McQuay of Nixa, MO. Five grandchildren, Allyx (Jason) Rinker, Brittany McQuay, Taylor McQuay, Kevin Ivie and Kimberly (Jimmy Weber, fiancé) Ivie. Ten great grandchildren, Leif, Vaida, Soli Ann, Caydon, Sylvan, Cael, Serenity, Breanne, Addison and Karson. Brothers Bob McQuay of Paola, KS and Ronald (Wynonna) McQuay of Stockton, MO, sisters Sharon Martin of Lane, KS, Mary McQuay of Lane, KS and sister in-law Elnora Henness of Osawatomie, KS and Marilyn McQuay of Topeka, KS along with nieces, nephews and other family and friends. He had been climbing the highway to heaven and now his journey is complete.
