In 1942, during his senior year, George was drafted into the United States Army. The army granted him a deferment so he could graduate high school. The army first sent him to Stanford University in California then on to the University of Kansas to study engineering. In 1944 George's 242nd Infantry Regiment landed in Europe where he was stationed until in 1946 he was honorably discharged as a 1st Sergeant.

George also raised and trained short haired English pointers. He would take them to Field Trials where they won many awards.
