Barbara Joan Lewis

Barbara Joan (Craig) Lewis of Olathe, Kansas passed away on February 3, 2024. Barbara was born in Iola, KS to Clelia Margaret (Fawks) Craig and William “Bix” Raisbeck Craig on December 1, 1939. She was the oldest of four siblings: Sharon Lybarger, Nancy Calvin, and John Craig. She graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1957 and went on to study at Baker University and the University of Kansas Medical School, where she received her nursing degree. In 1962 she married her high school sweetheart, Richard Lewis of Osawatomie, and they had two daughters, Jennifer Turner and Carrie Lewis.

Barbara worked for many years as a school nurse in Olathe, KS at Northview Elementary and Central Elementary. She and her family are members of the Grace United Methodist Church in Olathe. Barbara was an amazing bridge player, loved reading, liked crafts and was fearless to take up new hobbies like water aerobics, bowling, golfing, and biking. She and Richard were well traveled, taking cruises around the world, train rides across continents and road trips all over the US. She will be remembered for her love of sweets, love of family, unwavering faith, quiet determination and humor.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and sister Nancy.

Barbara is survived by her husband: Richard of Olathe, KS and daughters: Jennifer (Scott) Turner of Olathe, KS and Carrie (Stephen Wells) of New York, sister: Sharon (Larry, deceased) Lybarger of Tucson, AZ, brother: John Craig (Pat) of Denver, CO. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Alexandra DeSanto (Tim), Beau Turner (Taylor), Emma Turner, Oliver Wells, and Ezra Wells, and two great-grandchildren: Ava Layne DeSanto and Jett Vaughn Turner.
