Hazel Lorraine Phillips age 78 of Paola, KS died October 12, 2018.
Hazel was born October 29, 1939 in Garnett, KS. She was the third of six children born to Frank Elmer and Blanche Lorraine (Farrar) Weatherbie. She grew up in Lane, KS. She graduated with the Lane High School class of 1957.
On October 4, 1957, Bruce Phillips and Hazel were united in marriage in Lane, KS. The couple made their home in a few places while Bruce was in the Army. Together, Bruce and Hazel had five children Darrell, Lori, Lisa, Dallas and Charles. The marriage later ended in divorce.
Before her children were in school, Hazel was a homemaker. When she started working, Hazel was a jack of all trades. She worked at Willard’s IGA in Osawatomie as a cashier. She worked at King Radio for 10 years. She even drove a roller for Miami County Road and Bridge for a summer. Hazel was a bus driver and also worked as a receptionist at Olathe Body Shop. Hazel then began her career as the Johnson County District Court Clerk. She worked for 11 years until she decided to retire in June of 2010.
Hazel was a provider. If someone needed something she was always there and could make it happen. She had many talents. Hazel wrote and illustrated short stories. She enjoyed painting, sewing and she made costumes. Hazel was an amazing baker. She was famous for her cookies and pies. Hazel could play the piano by ear and taught herself how to dance. She taught dance lessons in Osawatomie. Hazel was good at just about everything she did. She was an avid bowler and was very skilled. Even on the Wii Nintendo she would beat everyone. Her loves include, football (especially Jon Montana), Elvis, Roy Rogers and watching movies. Hazel’s greatest love though was her family. She would show pictures of her family to everyone. She was a member of the Eagles and the VFW in Paola.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Dorothy June Johnston, Janie Louise Clark and Alice Faye Wheeler.
Survivors include children Darrell (Esmeralda) Phillips of Gardner, KS, Lori Wilson of Paola, KS, Lisa (James) Wiltsey of Kansas City, KS, Dallas (Sheila) Phillips of Paola, KS and Charles (Cathi) Phillips of Liberty, MO. Brother Ron (Jo) Weatherbie of Princeton, KS and Jo Diane Sommer of Garnett, KS. Six grandchildren Johnny Wilson, Amber (Dallas) Phillips- Goodlet, Amara Phillips, Conner Phillips, Eli Phillips and Lyla Phillips and one great granddaughter Vada Blu Goodlet. Along with other family and many friends.
