Herman Marquez, 84 of Hutchinson KS passed peacefully Thursday August 29 th in his son’s home in Osawatomie, KS surrounded by his family.

Herman was born April 25, 1935 in Deerfield KS the third of eight children of Elenterus and Maria Coronado Marquez. He spent his childhood in Kendall, KS and excelled in basketball during his high school years. He was even known to paint his fingers colors so when he dribbled the basketball his opponents only saw a blur of color.  He graduated from Kendall High School in 1952.

In January 1955 Herman enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Specialist Third Class until 1957.  He remained in the Army Reserves until 1962 when he was honorably discharged.

On December 13, 1958, he married Betty Sarah Tomson at the St. Raphael Catholic Church in Syracuse, KS.  They became the parents of two sons, Mark Anthony and Mathew John.

They remained in the Syracuse area until 1964 then moved to Hutchinson for Herman to work at the Detroiter Mobile Home Plant.  In 1965 he went to work for the Republic Paperboard Company and remained there until his retirement 25 years later.  During his time at the plant, he started out picking up trash and working his way up to shift supervisor.  Herman valued hard work and doing a job to the best of his ability. These are values he passed on to his sons.  He never turned down extra shifts and always felt like the plant was part of his family. While employed there he also served as an interpreter when the company negotiated contracts in Mexico.

Herman spent time with his sons mowing lawns, riding bikes, fishing, listening to music and tinkering around in his garage.  He loved spending time outdoors working in his yard on a project and tinkering on his 1961 Chevy Short bed Pickup.  One of his many joys in life was always having a dog by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Cecil Marquez of Hutchinson, KS.

He is survived by his wife Betty; his two sons, Mark (Patty) Marquez, Osawatomie, KS and Mathew (Susi) Marquez, Langley, British Columbia, Canada; four granddaughters, Kindyl (Ian) Elliott, Springfield, MO, Chyna Marquez and Endya Marquez, San Diego, CA, and Ahmya Jean Marquez, Langley, British Columbia, Canada; two great-grandsons, Gage Marquez, Springfield, MO and Lorenzo Herman Rameriz, San Diego, CA; five sisters, Esther (Paul) Lusk, Beaver, OK, Teresa (Kelly) Winlock, Ignacio, CO, Jessie (Eugene) Velasquez, Abilene, KS, Julia (Roger) Allen, Kansas City, MO, and Helen (Leo) Kaiser, Hutchinson, KS; one brother Felix Marquez, Hutchinson, KS; sister-in-law Marlene Marquez, Hutchinson, KS;  numerous family and friends.
