Jacqualyn Jean Platt, age 91 , of Osawatomie, KS died Saturday September 1, 2018 at Olathe Hospice House, Olathe, KS after a brief illness.
Jackie was born March 21, 1927 in California Junction, IA. She was the second of four children born to Francis Hiram & Zora Muriel (Fredrickson) Day. Jackie grew up and attended schools in Missouri Valley, Iowa. After graduation from Missouri Valley High School in 1945, she attended Grinnell College and then Iowa State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1949. She then spent the next several years teaching high school home economics in northeastern Iowa.
Jackie was united in marriage to Donald Franklin Platt on June 7,1953 in Missouri Valley, IA. The couple then moved to Osawatomie, KS where they made their home together for the next 48 years. The couple had three children, Cheryl, David and Mark.
Jackie enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother for a number of years. During this time, she earned her elementary education teaching certificate and in 1969 returned to the classroom as a teacher in Paola schools. Shortly thereafter, her career brought her back to Osawatomie, where she taught third grade at East Elementary for nearly two decades, retiring in 1989. In retirement, she spent time in the classroom as a substitute teacher for a number of years.
Jackie spent her entire adult life being very active in her community. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Osawatomie for 65 years, she served in many different capacities. Jackie taught Sunday School for nearly six decades, served on the board of deacons, taught in the church’s vacation Bible school program, and was very active in Presbyterian Women’s Guild at her church. She also gave the children’s sermon at church from time to time, a role she cherished. Jackie was a sixty-year member and past president of Chapter DO P.E.O. She served her community as a member on the Osawatomie Public Library Board and after retirement was elected to a four-year term on the USD 367 school board. Jackie was also an active member of the East Central Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel.
An avid reader, Jackie also enjoyed playing bridge and cooking, especially baking for family and friends. She also loved her Royals baseball and KU basketball. But, by far, her favorite activity was attending the activities and sporting events of her three children, her eight grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years Frank, her parents, and her siblings Richard Day, Marjorie Ranney and Eleanor Tingwald. She was also preceded in death by half-sister Mildred Purcell.
Survivors include children, Cheryl (Mike) Grosdidier of Lawrence, KS, David (Sue) Platt of Shawnee, KS and Mark (Karen) Platt of Shawnee, KS, eight grandchildren Jill (Mark) Dodge, Jamie (Chris) Cigich, John Grosdidier, Wendy (David) Kirkpartrick, Aaron (Lindsay) Platt, Andrew Platt, Ross (Abby) Platt and Amanda Platt and eight great grandchildren, Stella, Liam, Cara, Truman, Dylan, Finley, Henry and Wyatt. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
