James Kenneth "Kenny" Dykes

September 30, 1944 — January 19, 2025

James Kenneth “Kenny” Dykes, a devoted family man and passionate outdoorsman, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 19, 2025 at Parkview Heights in Garnett, KS at the age of 80. Born in Garnett, KS on September 30, 1944, James graduated from Greeley High School in 1962, where he began building a life marked by hard work, dedication, and love for his family and community.

In 1966, James married the love of his life, Marilyn Sommer, and together they shared a beautiful life spanning 58 years. Their family grew to include two children, Brian and Kristina, who brought immense joy and pride to his life.

Kenny worked for a glass company early in his career, but his most notable professional legacy was his 30 years of service at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant. He began in production and transferred to a position in security, where he retired in 1996.

Outside of work, Kenny found fulfillment in the great outdoors. He had a deep appreciation for nature and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trap shooter. In his younger years, he also trapped animals for their fur, a skill and passion he carried with pride. His love for the outdoors brought him peace and joy, and he cherished the time spent in the woods and on the water.

Kenny will be remembered for his steadfast work ethic, his love for his family, and his passion for the natural world. He was a member of the NRA, Millcreek Shooting Club and Lake Garnett Shooting club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Charles and Howard and two sisters Joann and Dorothy.

He is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn, his children Brian (Sara) Dykes of Garnett, KS and Kristina (Robert) Redding of Olathe, KS, three grandchildren James Redding, Beau Dykes and Jackson Dykes, five great grandchildren; Winnie, Ellie, Wade, Ranger and Georjette, numerous nieces and nephews and a community of family and friends who will miss him dearly. Until we meet again, "Toodles".
