Jose Ventura Chavez age 92 of Ottawa, KS formerly of Osawatomie, KS died Friday October 22, 2021 at Rock Creek of Ottawa.

Jose, also known as Joe, was born July 14, 1929 in Bassett, KS. He was the third of sixth children born to Marcial and Irene (Salasar) Chaves. He grew up in Iola, where he attended school. After high school, Joe enlisted into the United States Air Force. He served for four years and then he was honorably discharged.

After being discharged, Joe went to work for the United States Postal Service where he worked for a number of years.

In 1953, Joe married Thelma in Wichita, KS. To this union came three children: Joe, Jo Ann and Sylvia. They made their home in Rose Hill, KS. The marriage later ended in divorce.

Joe liked to garden and enjoyed being outside. He planted at least 100 tomato plants every year. Joe loved his family and helped them in any way he could.

He was preceded in death by his son Joe Chavez, his parents, siblings Albert and Jesse Chavez.

Survivors include his daughters, Jo Ann Hufford of Wichita, KS and Sylvia Hoffman of Ottawa, KS. Four grandchildren Brandy Walldren of Topeka, KS, Christina Wright of Wichita, KS, Ashley Edwards of Milliken, CO and Crystal Hoffman of Ottawa, KS, eleven great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren and two sisters and one brother. Along with other family and friends.
