Lloyd LaVerne Barnett, also known as Barney, passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 83 in Paola, Kansas. He was born on July 11, 1940, in Paola, Kansas to Leo and Helen (Rohrer) Barnett. Lloyd was a caring and fun-loving individual who will be deeply missed by his loved ones.
Lloyd graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1958. After completing his education he enlisted in the United States army in 1962 completing his schooling in army engineer heavy construction at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. His overseas post was at Fort Ingrandes, France where he served 24 months. He was honorably discharged in 1968.
In 1969 he married Patricia Diehm and later divorced. He then met Dixie Koontz and they were married on January 21, 1993.
Throughout his career Lloyd worked at various places. Working with his father in the plumbing/electrical business at Barnett & Son's, Powner Construction in Paola, Kansas, Moon Lake Cattle Company in Johnstown, Nebraska, and Dumbell Ranch in Hyannis, Nebraska. He later started his own business Barnett Construction Co. He also worked for Russ Cotton, Windler Construction, and retired from the Miami County Department of Road & Bridge.
In his free time, Lloyd had a variety of hobbies. He enjoyed horseback riding and had a passion for prairie dog hunting. He and Dixie enjoyed leatherworking including making purses, belts, gun holsters, knife sheaths, and bracelets while RVing in Arizona.
Lloyd is survived by his wife Dixie (Koontz) Barnett, his daughter Christe (Brad) Sharp, his granddaughter Anna Sharp, his grandson Derek Sharp, his son Brian Koontz, his granddaughter Jessica Koontz, his sisters Beverly (David) Dennis, Evelyn (Glenn) Camerer, Sonia Sherman, his nephews Shawn (DeAnna) Younkin, Brandon (LaDell) Younkin, and his niece Kresta Sherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Helen Barnett, his brothers-in-law Clyde Younkin and Kody Sherman, and his niece Alyssa Sherman.
A memorial service will be held later to celebrate Lloyd's life. He passed away at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. As per his wishes cremation has taken place. The Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie, KS, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Lloyd will be remembered for his caring nature, fun-loving spirit, and his dedication to his family and country. He leaves behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
