Lois Mae Haupt

Lois Mae Merritt age 88 of Osawatomie, KS died Saturday August 19, 2023 at Lifecare Center of Osawatomie.

Lois was born August 28, 1934 in Kansas City, KS. She was one of three born to Paul Willis and Mable Irene (Leaton) Merrit. She grew up in Kansas City, KS. Graduating with the Rosedale High School Class of 1951. After high school, Lois attended Phillip University in Enid, Oklahoma where she majored in scriptures and a minor in Religious Education. Lois earned her Bachelor’s degree in 1957.

Lois married Harold Noel Smith in 1953 in Enid, OK. To this union came four children; Linda, Steve, Deb and Lisa. The marriage later ended in divorce.

On October 28, 1989, Lois married William Riley Haupt in Lincoln, NE. Lois gained three step children; Dwight, Duane and Cheryl.

In her free time, Lois enjoyed reading, playing computer games, watching the Kansas City Royals and square dancing. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Lenexa, KS and the First United Methodist Church in Lincoln, NE. Lois was active in the church choir and the bell choir.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Lisa Swartz, her parents, two brothers; Paul “Bill” Merritt and James Merritt, and ex-husband Harold Smith.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years William, children; Linda Smith, Steve (Kathy) Smith and Deb (Dave) Plucknett; stepchildren; Dwight (Lorraine) Haupt, Duane Haupt and Cheryl Nosky. Grandchildren Kyle, Kaleb, and Kory Larimore, Krista Jordan, Ben Giguere, Bob and Chris Nosky, Kaylee Swartz, and Devin & Carl Nygren. Along with other family and friends.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Monday, August 28 at 2pm at

St. Paul United Methodist Church
