Mary E. Matney

Mary E. Matney age 78 of Olathe, KS died Thursday February 29, 2024 at her home in Olathe, KS.

Mary was born January 4, 1946 in Enid, OK to Howard Harland and Ruth Agnes (White) Bussell. She grew up in Kansas and attended Jewel Rural High School where she graduated in 1964.

On November 20, 1966 she married John David Matney in Osborne, Kansas and they made their home in Paola, and became the parents of daughter Sara. When Sara was ready to enter school, they moved to Osawatomie and John went to work for the Frisco Railroad which later became Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

In 1986 Mary and her family moved to Olathe where they still reside. She went to work for Olathe Medical Center where she worked in the surgery department. After retirement, Mary drove a taxi and her and John both worked as a school crossing guards.

Mary attended church at the Hillcrest Christian Church and was a former member of First Christian Church in Osawatomie.

Mary loved the church!  She, served in many roles in the churches where she was a member.  She served as Sunday school teacher, board member, choir member, and elder.  She also, was active in women’s bible study groups, church camp, and missions.

When she wasn’t serving at the church, Mary enjoyed coloring books, gardening, and growing house plants.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband John, and her parents.

Survivors include her daughter Sara and husband Marc Collins, two grandchildren Jorden (Matt) Hale and Timothy (KD) Collins and brother James Bussell.

Service for Mary is planned for April 20, 2024 at 10 am at Hillcrest Christian Church in Overland Park. Memorials are to the COPD Foundation or Tall Oaks Conference Center.
