Milo Eugene Lyons, age 80 of Osawatomie, Kansas died Tuesday August 24, 2021 at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas.
Milo was born on March 30, 1941 at home in Mound Creek Township, Kansas. He was the tenth child of thirteen children born to Melvin Ellis and Josephine P. (Thompson) Lyons.
He grew up in the Mound Creek area of rural Osawatomie and attended school in a one-room schoolhouse, Mound Creek Country School. He attended high school at Parker, Kansas, graduating from Parker High School with the class of 1959.
Milo married Judy R. Golden on October 7, 1961 and began their family of two daughters and three sons. The family moved often as Milo worked several construction jobs as a brick layer and other working positions around the Kansas City area, as a ranch hand at the Diamond B Ranch near Wilsey, Kansas. Later returning to the Miami County area, he worked many years in the oil fields in the north part of the county, Paola Lumber & Coal, the produce department of Price Chopper, and in hardware at the Family Center. In his retirement, he enjoyed driving the bus for the Foster Grandparent Program.
As a long-time gardener, he grew many vegetables and loved to enjoy harvesting and canning them for the family. In his earlier years, he enjoyed training dogs and going coon hunting, as well as fishing for catfish. He also loved to train and ride horses, which he had done many times throughout his life for riding and pulling buggies. He was an avid reader of western novels, was a regular at the Osawatomie library, and has read many authors over the years.
Milo used his construction skills to create pieces of furniture, wall hangings, and various decorative wood pieces out of his workshop in his spare time. Several of his items are still in homes of family and friends or can be seen throughout holiday seasons in yards.
He put his creativity more recently into baking different breads, pies, cookies and other goodies. He would sometimes put in a special ingredient that was not in the recipes but would enhance the taste. His quest to perfect recipes has resulted in many family members or friends getting to be testes to give him input on the results. He also enjoyed watching a variety of sports and would track the scores of each NFL game, but his most excitement was the Chiefs.
Milo was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers: Ted, Marion, Phillip, John, Virgil, and Melvin, and three sisters: Relda Bruce, Stella Folden, and Mary Alice Kuder.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, of the home, two daughters: Jolene (Philip) Coffelt and Tammy (Craig) Filipin, both of Osawatomie, and three sons: Troy (Barbara) Lyons and Melvin (Tammy) Lyons, both of Osawatomie and Virgil (Patricia) Lyons of Paola. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Lyons, of Emporia, Kansas and two sisters: Irene Croan of Chanute, Kansas and Neva Lyons of Osawatomie.
Milo enjoyed his seventeen grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren with one on the way and 6 great-great grandchildren and was excited with each and every one like they were the first born. He also enjoyed his many extended family members and friends.
He will be cremated and laid to rest in the Mound Creek Cemetery with a small service of family and friends. Memorials are to Osawatomie Community Garden and may be sent in c/o Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home P.O. Box 430 Osawatomie, KS 66064
