Myrtle Eulla “Dolly” Martin age 90 of Topeka, KS formerly of Osawatomie, KS died Sunday August 5, 2018 at St. Francis Health in Topeka.
Dolly was born February 12, 1928 in Wellsville, KS. She was the fifth of six children and a twin born to Charles Edward and Nellie Edna (Adams) Reed. She grew up in the Miami and Franklin County areas. She attended school near Hillsdale. After school, Dolly went to work in a home in Paola as a housekeeper and nanny.
Around 1948, Dolly met Lester Elwood Martin at the Play Mart in Paola. The couple married on December 5, 1948 in Osawatomie at Lester’s parents’ home. Lester and Dolly made their home in Osawatomie. Together they had three children Daniel, Dennis and Linda.
Dolly worked as a daycare provider, took in ironings, sold Artex tube paint, made wedding cakes and worked at JC Penny’s and Ralph’s Grocery store but being a housewife and mom is what she enjoyed the most. Dolly lead Cub Scout and Girl Scout when her children were young. She would sew shirts for the boys and made her daughter’s wedding dress. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting. She and Lester loved camping. They traveled all over the US in their camper. They had a cabin on the west side of Ottawa and it sat on the Marais De Cygne River. Lester, Dolly and their family would go and stay at the cabin on the weekends. They would fish and hunt squirrels.
Dolly enjoyed doing arts and crafts. She was a member and president of the Osawatomie Hobby and Craft Club. During the John Brown Jamboree, Dolly would enter arts and crafts and vegetables that she grew into the contest and received many ribbons. She was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 65 years. Dolly was in the Mera Class and helped with many mission projects over the years. She coordinated funeral dinners at the church and taught Sunday school. Dolly was a former member of the Eastern Star in Osawatomie. She was also a member of the Twin River Camping Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Lester, her parents, granddaughter Brittany Martin, four great grandchildren, Chase Jones, Anthony Martin, Piper Sampel and Gabe Smith, three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include children Daniel (Debra) Martin of Fontana, KS, Dennis (Lori) Martin of Osawatomie, KS and Linda (Steven) Call of Topeka, KS, nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren with one on the way. Along with other family and friends.
