Phyllis I. Maxwell, 88, has left us to be with the Lord after peacefully passing away Monday
May 7, 2018 at Glenn Carr Memory Care in Derby, KS.
She was born on June 24,1929 in Osawatomie, KS and the daughter of Howard O. and Lola Benair Manchester Matney. She was united in marriage to Marion G. Maxwell on May 31, 1947.
Phyllis graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1947 and worked for the Osawatomie State Hospital in the medical records office having responsibilities for admissions office, data processing and medical records office. In 1968-1970 she took a two year course for medical records technician and passed the national board for accreditation. Her status at retirement was medical records administrator. She was a loyal and dedicated, hardworking and faithful employee for 34 years. When she retired in 1988, she and Marion moved to their home on Lake of the Ozarks just outside of Laurie, MO where they enjoyed hosting family reunions and creating special memories for 25 years straight. In 2006 Phyllis and Marion moved to Wichita to be closer to family. In her years up to and including retirement Phyllis enjoyed her home, family, trips, church and sewing quilts.
While living in Osawatomie Phyllis and Marion were members of the First Christian Church. When they retired, they were part of the founding group of the West Lake Christian Church in Laurie, MO where they were active members for many years and enjoyed watching the church grow.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Judy Matney Barrett, brother Ron Matney and grandson Jeremy Grimm. Family members left to treasure her memory are two daughters Marilyn (Dennis) Carpenter of Wichita and Rickey Lynn (Bob) Grimm of Orrville, OH; 4 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Rilda Matney Bingaman Alexander, AR and Mary Etta (Phil) Markham Erie, KS; brother Fred Matney Osawatomie and many other cherished relatives and friends.
Family will have a private celebration of life followed by inurnment at the Cadmus Cemetery in early July. In lieu of floral contributions the family is asking that funds be given for the construction of churches in Rwanda. Checks need to be made to Central Community Church with “Rwanda Churches” in the memo. The mailing address is 6100 W Maple St, Wichita, KS 67209. The need for church buildings in Rwanda is great due to the government’s ultimatum for congregations to build approved structures or have their church’s status revoked.
