Thelma Doreen Landers age 95 of Osawatomie, KS died Sunday February 18, 2018 at her home.

Thelma was born August 24, 1922 in Osawatomie, KS. She was the eldest of five children and the only daughter born to Leonard William and Dessie Bell (Hadsell) Ferguson. She grew up in Osawatomie where she attended school until the 8 th grade.

On November 19, 1938, Thelma married Ernest Young in Kansas City, MO. Together the couple had two sons, Lester and Larry. They made their home in Kansas City. The marriage later ended in divorce. Thelma then moved back to Osawatomie with her two sons. She started seeing Eldon “Boog” Landers. They were united in marriage on May 1, 1947 in Paola, KS. Together they had two children Shirley and Charles and they made their home in Osawatomie.

Thelma was a home maker but was a jack of all trades. She was a hard worker and would do odd and end jobs. She painted houses and wallpapered. She was a laundress and would iron for people. She waitressed in most of the cafes around town. Thelma worked at the drive-in and she worked at the state hospital as a nurse. She was always ready to help.

Thelma loved craft work. She could make something beautiful with thing everyone else thought was trash. She was a skilled embroiderer. She painted ceramics and hand towels.  She volunteered at the clothes closet in town when it was at the Southern Baptist Church. Thelma was involved in the Boy scouts when her sons were members. She even attended Boy Scout camp when her son Charles was in Boy scouts.  Thelma and Eldon were members of the Twin River Camping Club.  She was a member of the Assembly of God in Osawatomie but in her later years she attended the 1 st Christian Church of Osawatomie.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Eldon “Boog” Landers, son Charles Landers, her parents and four brothers.

Survivors include sons Lester Young of Belleville, KS and Larry Young of Osawatomie, KS and daughter Shirley (Bill) Whitaker of Stover, MO. Grandchildren Donna Peacor, Nancy (Victor) Allwine, April (John) Estep, Vickie (Stan) Witten, Larry (Tracy) Young Jr, Kevin (Teri) Young and Sandra (Chris) DeFazio, Fifteen great grandchildren and fifteen great great grandchildren. Along with other family and friends.
