Vernon L. Smith age 77 of Paola, KS died Monday January 28, 2019 at Olathe Medical Center.

Vernon was born March 25, 1941 in Rolla, MO. He was sixth of nine children born Leslie Gilbert and Nellie (Four-Hewitt) Smith. Vernon grew up and went to school in Rolla.

After school, Vernon started his career in construction. He worked his way from the bottom as a helper to owning his own truck. Vernon was a rambler. He moved all over for his job.  He lived in Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Florida and Indiana all for his career.

On February 24, 1977, Vernon married Janet Sue (Brown) Hedrick in St. James, MO. With that marriage Vernon gained three children Tammie, Richard and Tracey, that he took in as his own. The family traveled with Vernon to his job sites.

Vernon was a family man. His family always come first. He loved BBQing and having fish fry’s with his family and friends. He loved his dog Casey. Vernon was a wonderful Dad, Grandpa and great grandpa. In December, Vernon was baptized at his home with his family surrounding him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Joe Smith, sisters Louise Moreland, Dorothy Robinette Nellie Lou and Nancy.

Survivors include his wife Janet of the home, children Richard (Angel) Hedrick of Green Cove Spring, FL, Tammie (Greg) Good of Louisburg, KS and Tracey (Scott) Crosby of Osawatomie, KS. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Brother Johnny Profitt, Sisters Alice Elms, and Carolyn Johnson. Along with other family and friends.
