Colonel Walter “Walt” James Medlin, 93, Paola, Kansas passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at home with family.

Walt was born on February 25, 1927, in Seymour, Missouri to Pierce James and Edith (Bennett) Medlin. He grew up in Spring Hill and lived near Hillsdale, Kansas.  He married Ruth Ann Mack in 1948, and to this union two daughters were born.

Walt served in the United States Army during World War II where he was a medic and later worked in pharmacy.  He saw deployment in Germany, Poland, and Italy.  He was honorably discharged in 1947, but continued a life exemplified in responsibility, duty and honor towards his country.  In 2019 he completed an Honor Flight to Washington DC representing World War II veterans.

He was a lifelong Miami County businessman, farmer, auctioneer, realtor, and curator of Miami Memorial Gardens. For decades there was hardly an estate sale in Miami, Linn, Franklin, or Anderson County, Kansas that was not auctioneered by Medlin Real Estate & Auction.  Walt was also the quintessential horseman, being drawn to equines.  For much of his life you could find Walt in the saddle teaching his horses tricks or riding in parades around Eastern Kansas showing off his horsemanship skills.

Walt is preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Manual Medlin, Warren Medlin, Nadine Feris, Darlene Medlin, and Bob Medlin. He is survived his daughters: Starla Medlin and Walta Medlin-Frye of Paola, Kansas, his grandchildren Wyatt (Tiffany) Pemberton of Missouri City, Texas, Cami (Matt) Akes of Parker, Kansas and six great-grandchildren.  Siblings; Bennie Medlin, Jane Oliver, Blanche Stephens, Jerry Medlin, Mary Burns, Lorraine Roth and Margie Wiltse.
